Sheerness is a town on the Isle of Sheppey, in Kent. It is the largest town on the island, with a population of approximately 20,000 inhabitants. Sheerness was focus of a Dutch naval attack in June 1667 when 72 hostile ships compelled the 'sandspit fort' to surrender during the "Raid on the Medway", the Dutch occupied the town for a short while. Impressed by the civil behavior of the Dutch marines - they paid for their dinner - the town reinvited the Dutch Marine Corps for the third centennial of the raid. Sheerness was also site of a Royal Dockyard during the Tudor and Stuart era's. A ship built there in 1878, HMS Osprey, still exists today, and is currently being restored in Chatham. In 1860, the railways came to Sheerness, on a branch from Sittingbourne. he railway line incorporates a lift bridge still in use today. The ststion at Sheerness sees frequent services to Sittingbourne, from where connections to London Victoria can be obtained. Towns close to Sheerness include Minster, Sittingbourne, Gillingham, Chatham, Faversham, Rochester and Strood.
