About Swaffham - show infohide info
Swaffham is a town in the county of Norfolk. It has a population of 6935 inhabitants as of 2001. The town has previously had a thriving sheep and wool industry, and has been a market town for centuries. A new market cross was built and presented to the town by Horace Walpole in 1783. Atop the cross is a statue of the Roman Goddes Ceres, who was Goddess of harvest. The market place still has Georgian buildings and a domed rotunda. The Assembly rooms were the centre of society in these times. Today, the town is probably best known for being home of Michael Carroll, the infamous 'Lotto Lout' (or 'King of Chavs'), who won almost £10 million on the lottery, but has continued to behave badly and make life hell for local residents. Swaffham is bypassed by the A47 bypass. The town has no rail service. Nearby towns inlude King's Lynn, Norwich, Wisbech, March, Whittlesea, Ely, Thetford, East Dereham and Wymondham.
