Durham is a small city with an exceptional castle and cathedral that have been designated a World Heritage Site. The Norman castle, built on a peninsular overlooking the River Wear, was begun in 1072 and positioned adjacent to a Benedictine monastery. St. Cuthbert was buried here. In the 19th century, the University was founded, thanks to the benevolence of Bishop Van Mildert and the Cathedral Chapter.
