About Skipton - show infohide info

Skipton is a market town in the Craven district of North Yorkshire. An open air market is still held 4 times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday. Skipton still has an well preserved 12th century castle, one of the best preserved medieval castles in the UK. The town lies on the River Aire, and on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which previously brought trade to the town, once a centre of the textile and fabric industry. The town was also a major railway centre, with various works and depots in the town. Today it is a shadow of its former self; while the station is still fairly busy, the ancilliary services for the railway are mainly gone. The station at Skipton now sees frequent services to Leeds and Bradford Forster Square, which start and terminate at Skipton. the station also sees services on the line between Leeds and Morecambe and Lancaster, as well as Leeds and Carlisle via the famous Settle and Carlisle line. Nearby towns include Gargrave, Ilkley, Barnoldswick, Hellifield, Settle, Keighley and Silsden.
