Stratford-upon-Avon is a town in the county of Warwickshire, with a population of 23,676 inhabitants. The town lies on the River Avon, and is famous for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The town grew as it was a market town, granted its charter in medieval times. The town has been associated with narrowboat building and aluminium ware industries, but its main source of money is tourism from William Shakespeare. A number of attractions related to the the famous playwright include his birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage at Shottery (the former home of Shakespeare's wife), and Mary Arden's House (the former home of his mother). There are also a number of theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon, including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, which sits on the banks of the River Avon. The RSC operate two more theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon also; the Swan, and The Other Place, a black box theatre. Non-Shakespeare related attractions in the town include a teddybear museum, a butterfly farm, Bancroft Gardens, and The Black Swan (locally known as the 'Dirty Duck'), a pub said to be frequented by actors 'fresh from the stage'. The town itself is also very photogenic with a number of original Tudor-era buildings. The number of tourists cause tension with local residents, as the influx of cars and tour buses causes congestion, particularly as the town suffers from fairly narrow streets as a result of its Tudor architecture. The station at Stratford-upon-Avon is a terminus, and sees trains to Birmingham Snow Hill, London Marylebone, Leamington Spa and Stourbridge Junction. The town is well linked to Birmngham and London, as it lies just off the M40. Nearby towns to Stratford include Warwick, Banbury, Royal Leamington Spa, Evesham, Redditch, Droitwich Spa, Bromsgrove, Kenilworth, Rugby and Coventry.
