Immingham is a town near Grimsby, in North East Lincolnshire, located on south bank of the River Humber. Its population at the 2001 census was 9,955. The town contains a memorial marking the site of the 1608 departure of the Pilgrim Fathers to flee to Holland. Nearby, Immingham Docks is a large port and industrial complex. The port partnership of Grimsby & Immingham is the largest port in the UK in terms of tonnage, with a total traffic of 55.9 million tonnes, 10% of the total, in 2003. It also contains a large railways yard and depot. Large numbers of redundant railway vehicles have recently been scrapped at Immingham Railfreight Terminal. The town is linked to London and much of the UK via the M180, which is connected to the M1 via the M18. Humberside Airport is also a short distance away. Nearby towns include Kingston-upon-Hull, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Beverley.
