About Perth Australia - show infohide info

Perth is the state capital, and most populous city in the state of Western Australia. The city has an estimated popualtion of 1.5 million people, making Perth the 4th largest city in Australia. Perth was established in 1829 as the capital of the Swan River colony, it later became a convict colony. The name Perth was chosen by a Scotsman, James Stirling, who chose to name the town after his native Perthshire. After a referendum in 1900, Western Australia chose to join the Federation of Australia in 1901. Western Australia was the last colony to join, and only once other states offered concessions such as a railway line from the eastern states via Kalgoorlie. Since then, Perth has prospered as a result of mining, as Western Australia is rich in mineral resources. Perth is a very isolated town, and as a result many of the inhabitants view the larger cities to the east with a little distrust. Perth is closer to the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, than it is to Canberra. Perth is a flight of several hours from the main cities of Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne, or a rail journey of three days. The city is like many other Australian cities, in that it has a lively culture, with pubs, bars and trends restaurants, as well as nightclubs, cinemas and concert halls. The city is linked internally by rail, bus and ferry, all operated by the TransPerth network. The Indian Pacific railway terminated in Perth, with its freight services terminating 15km out from the CBD at the Kewdale Rail Terminal. Perth Airport sees a number of domestic flights, operated by Qantas and Virgin Blue, as well as a number of smaller operators, and international flights offered by Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, South African Airways, Thai International and several others.
