About Bournemouth - show infohide info

Bournemouth is a seaside resort on the south coast of England, with a population of 163,500 inhabitants. At the start of the 19th century, the town of Bournemouth barely existed; in 1810 all that existed was an inn to cater for travellers (and often, smugglers). Army office Lewis Tregonwell, with his wife, bought several acres of land and built a house in area; the house is now a part of the Royal Exeter Hotel. Tregonwell also planted palm trees, offering a shaded walk to the beach. Bournemouth rapidly became a destination for the rich and affluent, and the town grew rapidly, to 17,000 people by 1880, and to 60,000 by 1900. The town continued to grow, and attractions for tourists included theatres, cinemas, the pier and the pleasure gardens. Today, the pier still stands and has a leisure centre on the end. The pier has had a colourful history, first being built in 1861, before being rebuilt in 1880, and extended twice, in 1894 and 1909. In the 1940s, the pier was substantially demolished by the army, for fear of invasion from the German Army. It was rebuilt in 1946, refurbished in 1950, and fully restored to its current layout in 1979. Bournemouth has a number of hotels catering the the tourist trade, the majority of whom are retired. As a result, a large number of retirement homes also lie along the coast. Bournemouth is served by rail, with the station being a long way from the centre, as the city leaders did not originally see the benefit in rail. Later, a more central station was built, though this has now been removed. South West Trains operates a comprehensive service to London Waterloo with a journey time of as little as 97 minutes. This line also serves Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke to the East, and Poole, Wareham, Dorchester and Weymouth to the West. Virgin Trains serve destinations to the North with direct trains to Reading, Oxford, Birmingham and the Midlands, Manchester and the Northwest, Yorkshire, Newcastle, and Edinburgh and Glasgow. Bourneouth also has an airport, which sees flights to Dublin, Glasgow (Prestwick) and Barcelona (Girona). Additionally, Air Berlin serve their hub in Paderborn. The airport is a hub for low-cost airline Thomsonfly, who serve a number of European tourist destinations, in addition to Paris and Venice, plus a winter service to Salzburg. Rockhopper also operate flights to Guernsey. Nearby towns to Bournemouth include Poole, Christchurch, Wareham, New Milton, Weymouth, Dorchester, Fareham and Southampton.
