About Ashbourne - show infohide info
Ashbourne is located in England's Midlands in the county of Derbyshire. It resides at the south end of the Pennine mountains and advertises itself as 'The Gateway to Dovedale'. In 2005 Ashbourne became a Fairtrade town, with many shops and businesses supporting the Fairtrade policies now run by the local Ashbourne Fairtrade Town Initiative. It hosts a two day annual Royal Shrovetide Football Match with one side of town playing the other. Ashbourne itself is a predominantly Georgian market town nestling in the gently sloping Henmore valley. Derby city is only 15 miles away, and it has relatively close links to Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester and Birmingham. Ashbourne had previously been the meeting point of six main coaching routes, including the London to Manchester route. This made it a local commercial centre, and is now still regarded as one by the local villages. The local history of Ashbourne includes an occurrence where Oliver Cromwell fired his artillery at St Oswald's Church, and Bonnie Prince Charlie's proclamation of his Father as King as he marched through to London.
