About Staines - show infohide info
Staines is a town inside the M25 circular motorway. Originally, Staines was in the county of Middlesex. However, when much of Middlesex became part of Greater London, Staines was instead transferred to the county of Surrey. Settlement has existed in Staines since 43 AD, when the Romans built the first bridge in the town. The domesday book provides documentary eveidence of the local area, however Staines only started to expand later, when the railway arrived in 1848 from Waterloo. The town was involved mainly with the linoleum industry, which started when the first factory opened in 1862. Today, the town acts as a commuter town for London, and also for nearby Heathrow Airport. The town supports these needs, and acts as a service town for its inhabitants. Thus the town has a shopping centre, opened in 1996, and a leisure centre. As well as acting as a commuter town, Staines also plays host to some large companies, including BUPA and LogicaCMG. The town is known for an major air crash which occured in 1972 when a BEA Trident stalled after takeoff, crashing alongside the A30, killing all on board. On a lighter note, the town featured heavily in the 2002 film 'AliG - Indahouse'. Staines is still linked to London by Rail, seeing regular services to London Waterloo, Windsor and Eton, Weybridge and Reading. the town is also well placed for access to the M25, the Staines section of which opened in 1985. Towns close to Staines include Slough, Hounslow, Bracknell, Windsor, Camberley, Egham, Kingston-upon-Thames, Esher, Woking, Chertsey and Weybridge. London Heathrow airport is also a short distance away.
