About Newhaven - show infohide info
Newhaven is a town in the county of East Sussex east of Brighton and Hove in England. It is a seaport from which a ferry crosses the English Channel to Dieppe in Normandy. The town is home to a small marina and a fairly large industrial harbour at the mouth of the River Ouse, Sussex and is defended by Newhaven Fort, built into the cliffs. Whilst the commercial and industrial communities of Newhaven have declined, the town has been granted quite extensive regeneration programmes for several years, to varying degrees of success. These have included a huge increase in properties built in the town over the past decade or so. Newhaven used to be named Meeching until the 16th Century when a great storm diverted the course of the Sussex Ouse so forming a NewHaven. Towns close to Newhaven include Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Eastbourne, Hastings, Haywards Heath and Bexhill
