About Ross On Wye - show infohide info
Ross-on-Wye is a market town of 10,000 inhabitants, situated on the River Wye, in Herefordshire, at the edge of the Forest of Dean. Ross-on-Wye is known for its numerous public houses, and antique shops. The town holds markets on Saturdays and Thursdays in the sandstone "Market House" building, which was built between 1650 and 1654, replacing an earlier, wooden, markt building. The 700-year-old St Mary's Parish Church is the towns most known landmark, and its spire is visible from all directions as you approach the town. In the front of the church is a large and rare Plague Cross, commemorating the three hundred or so townsfolk who were buried here by night without coffins during a savage outbreak of the plague in 1637. Ross-on-Wye is well linked by road to Birmingham via the M50, which ends a mile outside the town. Towns close by Ross-on-Wye include Gloucester, Newent, Hereford, Cinderford, Coleford, Monmouth, Whitchurch and Longhope
