About Dudley - show infohide info

Dudley is a town in the West Midlands of England, with a population 186,513 as of 2001. Dudley dates from Medieval times, when a castle was established here in the 8th century. The present castle, on the same site, dates from 13th century, and it was around the castles that the town grew. The town of Dudley wasn't particularly important throughout the middle ages, however during the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries, and thus the population of the town expanded drastically. The main industries of the town were the mining of coal and limestone. Other industries included steel, iron, engineering, metallurgy, glass cutting, textiles and leatherworking. These industries were particularly big in the 'Black Country' region in which Dudley lies, and in fact are the reason why the Black Country is so called, due to all the polluting industries. During the 19th century, Dudley was filled with a number of cheap terraced houses with poor sanitation. These have been cleared, and replaced by council owned flats and homes. Some of the original homes are still existing, though have been updated with modern sanitation services. In 2002, the town was hit by an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale; the largest earthquake to occur for 10 years in the UK. Several comedians subsequently suggested it had caused millions of pounds of improvements! Attractions in the town include Dudley Zoo, and the Black Country Living Museum. The ruins of Dudley castle lie within the grounds of the zoo. The canals around Dudley are popular with walkers, cyclists, narrowboat-users and fishermen. Also, Dudley has a number of unusual specialist shops, including Ferret World. Dudley has no station of its own, as it was closed during the Beeching era of British Rail. Today, the towns main station is at Sandwell and Dudley, which sees trains to Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton and Liverpool Lime Street, as well as Virgin West Coast services between Wolverhampton and London Euston. Dudley is additionally served by Tipton and Dudley Port, which sees local services between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton. Nearby towns to Dudley include Birmingham, Smethwick, Oldbury, Wolverhampton, Walsall, West Bromwich, Stourbridge, Halesowen, Solihull and Sutton Coldfield.
