Macclesfield is a town of 69,000 inhabitants, in the county of Cheshire. It is considered to be one of the wealthiest towns in Britain. The town is on the edge of the Peak District, and lies on the River Bollin. The town was granted a Royal Charter in 1261. In 1745, Charles Stuart marched through town en route to London. The Mayor of Macclesfield was reluctantly forced to welcome him; a scene depicted in one of Macclefield's famous silk Tapestries. Macclesfield was once the worlds largest producers of finished silk; now the towns four silk museums display a range of tapestries, as well as products and information from that period. Paradise Mill is an attraction showing the manufacture and weaving of silk to the public. Macclesfield was the birthplace of Hovis bread. Present day industries include pharmaceuticals, textiles, light engineering, plastics and paper. The town is also home to furniture manufacturers Arighi Bianchi. In 2004 The Times newspaper names Macclesfield the most boring and uncultured town in the UK, based on its lack of cinemas, theatres and cultural attractions despite its population. The town is well served by trains to Manchester, London, and Birmingham. The town is linked to the M6 via the A537. Manchester International Airport is just 10 miles away. Nearby towns include Stockport, Congleton, Bollington, Alderley Edge, Knutsford, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Buxton.
