Stamford is a town in the county of Lincolnshire. The town lies on the banks of the River Welland. The town originally started out as a Danish base, which had become famous in the middle wges for its production of wool and cloth. Stamford was also once a walled town, though today, few of the walls remain. Later, Stamford also became an inland port on the Great North Road. The town has a large number of listed buildings, and street after street of timber framed and stone buildings. If traffic and modern signs were remove, it would be difficult to tell which era Stamford is in; thus Stamford is frequently used in period dramas. Recently, the town featured in the film Pride and Prejudice. To the south of the town is RAF Wittering, which is one of the main employers in the town. It is also the 'home of the Harrier', operated by 20 Squadron. Stamford is served by regular trains between Birmingham New Street and Stansted Airport; the trains pass through Peterborough for connections to London and the East Coast Main Line. Nearby towns include Peterborough, Whittlesey, Wisbech, Corby, Leicester, Melton Mowbray, Kettering, Market Harborough, Oakham and Spalding.
