Southport is a seaside town in the county of Merseyside. The town was formerly part of Lancashire, however Southport council requested amalgamation with Bootle, placing Southport in the Sefton borough of Merseyside. The population of Southport is approximately 100,000 inhabitants. Southport was founded by William Sutton in 1798, however settlements has existed on the site for much longer - North Meols (now Churchtown) was mentioned in the Domesday book. Tourism plays a large part in Southport's economy. The town boasts the UK's longest overland pier, a theme park, a long sandy beach, a Victorian Pier, six golf courses and plenty of shops. The town is seen as an upmarket location, and attracts a number of wealthy footballers from nearby teams. the town holds a successful annual flower show. There are plenty of lodgings for tourists, including a number of caravan parks, hotels and a Pontin's holiday camp nearby. The town is well served by rail, with Merseyrail Electric services to Hunt's Cross (via Liverpool Central), and Northern Rail services to Manchester Airport (via Bolton and Manchester Piccadilly) as well as less frequent services to Manchester Victoria. Nearby towns to Southport include Ormskirk, Liverpool, Formby, Skelmersdale, Maghull, Lytham St Annes and Preston.
