About Aberystwyth - show infohide info
Aberystwyth is located the west coast of Wales, and is a popular area for tourists and students. It is home to the University of Wales Aberystwyth and the National Library. Aberystwyth is the principal holiday resort and administrative centre of the west coast of Wales. Aberystwyth is named from the Welsh 'Mouth of the Ystwyt' and is an historic market town and seaport of Ceredigion in Cardiganshire. Aberystwyth is often referred to as the capital of Mid Wales, and is close to some of the most spectacular scenery of the area. Nearby to Aberystwyth are the Cambrian Mountains, whose valleys contain forests and meadows which have little changed in centuries. Aberystwyth is nestled between three hills and two beaches, and hosts some castle ruins, a pier and a harbour. The hills contain remains from the Iron Age as well as a monument to Wellington. Atop the hills, you can survey the fantastic views of Cardigan Bay, which can be easily accessed by The Aberystwyth Electric Cliff Railway; the longest electric cliff railway in Britain. It travels up Constitution Hill from the northern end of the town's promenade with trains running every few minutes during the spring, summer and early autumn.
