Scarborough is a Seaside town in the county of North Yorkshire. The town lies 30-70m above sea level on limestone cliffs. The older part of the town lies around the harbour, and is protected by a headland. Scarborough is a major holiday resort, and is divided into two bays - the north and south bays. The south bay is the main focus of tourism, with amusement arcades and shopping overlooked by the town itself. The North Bay is the quieter side of the resort. Scarborough was founded in 966, by a Viking founder; this was burnt down by a rival Viking tribe, leaving very little to be recorded by the Domesday book in 1085. Scarborough was re-established, and granted royal charters in 1155 and 1163, allowing it to hold markets. In 1623, spa waters were discovered in the town, leading to the town becoming a seaside resort. With the coming of the York-Scarborough railway in 1845 tourism further expanded, and even today it is a major industry in the town, unlike in many seaside towns in the UK. It's resident population is almost 60,000, and this is boosted in the summer with the influx of toursts. Scarborough is still served by rail, with services to York, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds, Blackpool and Manchester. In the summer, numerous special charters run from York and further afield, some utilising steam locomotives. Nearby towns to Scarborough include Filey, Whitby, Loftus, Skelton, Pickering, Malton and Seamer.
