About Wallasey - show infohide info

Wallasey is a large town at the mouth of the River Mersey. It is an amalgamation of 7 previously existing townships (Liscard, Seacombe, Egremont, New Brighton, Wallasey Village, Poulton and Leasowe). These townships grew into one another when the Queensway Tunnel opened in 1934. Wallasey now has a population of approximately 50,000. Wallasey being a relatively new town in itself doesn't have much history, though the towns which make Wallasey up do. New Brighton was built around the New Brighton fort, built between 1825 and 1829 for defence purposes. New Brighton was also important for the Mersey Ferries, being a terminus for ferries from Liverpool. New Brighton has also been a seaside resort, and it retains a number of attractions desipite a drop in popularity. The town once had the tallest building in the UK, the New Brighton Tower, which was open between 1898 and 1921. It was one of Britains most popular seaside resorts, though declined in the 1940's, leading to the withdrawal of its ferry service to Liverpool. The 1860's New Brighton Pier was shut in the 1970s, and demolished in 1978. The village of Leasowe has a castle built by the 5th earl of Derby. There was also a lighthouse here, which operated until 1908. Seacombe was a more recent ferry terminal for the famous Mersey Ferries, as immortalised by the Gerry and the Pacemakers song "Ferry 'cross the Mersey". The ferries today travel in a triangular route between Liverpool, Seacombe and Birkenhead. Shopping in Wallasey is mainly in the suburb of Liscard, where there is a large shopping centre, called the Cherry Tree Shopping Centre. Today, Wallasey is largely a commuter town for Liverpool thanks to the excellent transport links - both the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels are nearby, offering good road connections to the city, as well as the alternative of the passenger ferry. There are three railway stations in the town - New Brighton, Wallasey Village and Wallasey Grove Road. These see services direct to Liverpool and Birkenhead.
