About Alnwick - show infohide info
Alnwick is a small market town in north Northumberland, in the north-east of England. With a small population, Alnwick has been deemed picturesque, historic, and 'the best place to live in Britain' by Country Life magazine. Alnwick district is stunningly beautiful and stretches from the unspoilt wilds of the Northumberland national Park in the west, to the spectacular heritage coast on the east. Dating back to around 600AD, Alnwick has been a thriving centre of agriculture. In medieval times, it housed powerful barons; the Earls of Northumberland, and Alnwick Castle still stands from this time, and be recognised as a film location, for everything from Harry Potter to Elizabeth to Becket to Blackadder. It dominates the west of the town, above the River Aln. The Castle is the hub of a number of commercial, educational and tourism operations. It houses American students studying in Europe; is the base of Northumberland Estates, the Duke's commercial enterprise; and is in its own right a tourist attraction. Though it is small, there is plenty to do. You can visit Alnwick's multi-purpose arts centre or its playhouse, as well as the relatively new Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre. More widely, the Alnwick district boasts a wealth of sporting and leisure facilities, including football, cricket, rugby, rambling, rock climbing, water sports, cycling and horse riding. Golf enthusiasts can find thirteen golf courses within 30 minutes drive of the town.
