About Halifax - show infohide info
Halifax is a town of 82,506 inhabitants, situated in the county of West Yorkshire, in the Calderdale district. The name Halifax is said to be a corruption of the Old English words for 'holy' and 'face', as it is local legend that the head of John the Baptist is buried in the town. The town's coat of arms still bears an image of the saint, and the towns Parish Church has always been dedicated to the saint. Halifax was formerly a large mill town, and so there is quite a lot of old terraced housing, mixed in with new homes in desirable areas. Ironically, many of the 19th century homes still stand, whereas several 1960's blocks of council homes were recently demolished due to poor conditions. North and West Halifax still has a reputation for being an undesirable place to live. The most desirable housing in the town tends to be located on the outskirts of the town. Attractions in the town include the 'Eureka!' childrens science museum, Halifax Piece Hall, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment Regimental Headquarters and Shibden Hall. Notable businesses in the town include Halifax building society, which started with a single branch in the town. The confectionist Nestle has a large factory in the town. Halifax is served by the Caldervale railway line; destinations served include Leeds, Selby, York, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Manchester Victoria and Blackpool North. Nearby towns to Halifax include Halifax, Sowerby Bridge, Todmorden, Huddersfield, Brighouse, Dewsbury, Morley, Bradford and Leeds.
