About Rugeley - show infohide info

Rugeley is a town situated in the county of Staffordshire, on the edge of Cannock Chase. Originally the town was known as Rudgeley, and in medieval times was a centre for iron and glass industries. Rugeley was a centre of coal mining for many years, until its final colliery, Lea Hall, was closed in 1991. Rugeley still retains a coal fired power station, Rugeley B, though coal no longer comes from the collieries via conveyor belt (the first such arrangement in Britain); most now arrives from further afield via rail. Rugeley today has two rail stations, Rugeley Trent Valley, and Rugeley Town, both seeing trains on the Stafford-Birmingham New Street line. Rugeley Trent Valley lies on the Scotland-London West Coast Main line, however trains on the Scotland-London line are infrequent. Nearby towns to Rugeley include Cannock, Stafford, Lichfield, Colwich, Uttoxeter, Hednesford, Penkridge and Burntwood.
