Sheerness is a town on the Isle of Sheppey, in Kent. It is the largest town on the island, with a population of approximately 20,000 inhabitants. Sheerness was focus of a Dutch naval attack in June 1667 when 72 hostile ships compelled the 'sandspit fort' to surrender during the "Raid on the Medway", the Dutch occupied the town for a short while. Sheerness was also site of a Royal Dockyard during the Tudor and Stuart era's. A ship built there in 1878, HMS Osprey, still exists today, and is currently being restored in Chatham.
