About Kendal - show infohide info
Kendal is a town of 27,521 inhabitants, situated in the county of Cumbria. Kendal was pronounced 'best place to live in the UK' by the university of Strathclyde, after an eight year study. The town is located on the edge of the Lake District National Park, and benefits from this location from the number of tourists passing through. Kendal has a history dating back several centuries, and has several (ruined) castles, the last build in the 12th century. The town is a chartered market town, and is based around a main street with a number of courtyards leading from the street, formerly used for defence against Celtic raiding parties. The town was originally associated with the manufacture of woollen goods, and later as a centre of shoe manufacture, however the decline of both industries have led to tourism being the main economy in the town. Kendal is also famous for the production of Kendal Mint Cake, a glucose based product marketed as an energy food. It is used by climbers, and has been used on numerous mountain-top expeditions. Kendal Mint Cake is exported around the world, and several different brands exist. The town is linked to Windermere and Oxenholme vis rail, with regular trains to Lancaster and Manchester. For other destinations passengers can change at Oxenholme for access to the West Coast Main Line. The town is also linked to the M6 via the A589 or A65. Nearby towns include Lancaster, Morecambe, Windermere, Ulverston, Ambleside, Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh.
