About Edinburgh - show infohide info

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, located in the Midlothian region of Scotland. The city has a population of 448,624, making it the second-largest city in Scotland after Glasgow. The first evidence for existance of the town dates from the 12th century, from a charter dated 1124 signed by King David I granting land to the Church of the Holy Rood of Edinburgh. The name Edinburgh is thought to come from Din Eidyn (Fort of Eidyn) from the time when it was a Gododdin hillfort. The city is a popular tourist destination, with the castle and historic Princes street attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually. The Edinburgh Festival is a highlight of the tourism year, bringing in an influx of visitors from around the world, and generating in excess of £100 million extra for the city's economy. Additionally, the Hogmanay new year celebrations are also well attended. Edinburgh is also an important business centre, and is home to numerous financial institutions, incuding the Headquarters of HBOS, Scottish Widows, Standard Life and the Clydesdale Bank. Brewers are also based in the city, the Caledonian Brewery being the largest in the country after the closure of the Fountainbridge brewery in 2005. Edinburgh's main railway station, Waverley, sees services across the UK, to London, the South Coast, Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee among a number of local destinations. Edinburgh is also served by its own airport, and sees flights around Europe, to destnations including Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Moscow, Paris, Alicante, Malaga, Faro, Stockholm and Copenhagen. Additionally, a number of scheduled UK domestic flights and 'highlands and islands' flights operate alongside frequent charters. Edinburgh also sees trans-Atlantic services to Newark, Toronto and Atlanta (starting in May). Nearby towns to Edinburgh include Livingstone, Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath, Falkirk, Glenrothes, Alloa and Dalkeith.
