Milton Keynes is a city in the county of Buckinghamshire. It was develped as a 'New City' to alleviate housing pressures in London, and today has a population of over 177,500. The 'New City' was designated by parliament in 1967, with the intention that it would eventually become a self-sustaining city. The city was built around a number of existing settlements, which have now been engulfed by the developments of Milton Keynes; these towns include Bletchley, Willen, Loughran and Great Linford. The original village of Milton Keynes still exists in the city, however has been renamed Middleton as it was named in the 1700s. A number of the villages that are now boroughs within the city have little to show they once existed. While Milton Keynes is usually referred to as city, it is still technically only a town as it has yet to be granted a Royal Charter. However, Milton Keynes is designed to be a city, and as a result it generally regarded as such. The road system in Milton Keynes is based on a grid system, similar to many US cities, except using roundabouts instead of crossroads. These roundabouts are usually 1km from one another in the centre of the city, and are infamous for confusing visitors to the town. Additionally, Milton Keynes enjoys numerous cycle paths, with most going underneath roads. Thus Milton Keynes is very pedestrian and cyclist friendly, making walking and cycling a practical alternative for the morning commute. A number of lage companies have set up offices in Milton Keynes, to take advantage of the availability of housing, as well as ease of access from surrounding areas. Milton Keynes Central station is served by services between London Euston and Northampton, operated by Silverlink, and between Euston and Manchester/Liverpool/Wolverhampton/Glasgow Central/Lancaster.
