About Cookstown - show infohide info
Cookstown is a town of approximately 11,000 inhabitants, in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The town was founded in 1609 by a planter named Alan Cooke, and became one of the main centres of the linen industry. Today, a working mill still exists in the town, Wellbrook Beating Mill; beating is the process used to smooth and polish the linen after manufacture. Cookstown's main street is the longest and widest in Ireland, at 1¾ miles long. The busiest day is Saturday, when the traditional market is held in Oldtown Street. A few miles away from Cookstown is Ardboe Cross (ironically in Moortown, and not in fact Ardboe) is one of the best examples of a 9th/10th century High cross in Northern Ireland. 22 panels illustrate stories from the Old Testament and the New Testament of the Bible. Nearby towns to Cookstown include Coagh, Tullyhogue, Stewartstown, Kildress, Pomeroy, Lissan and Moneymore.
