Manchester is a borough of northwest England east-northeast of Liverpool. Founded on the site of Celtic and Roman settlements, Manchester was first chartered in 1301. Greater Manchester is densely populated and highly industrialized. The Manchester Ship Canal affords access for oceangoing vessels. Manchester played a key part in the Industrial Revolution. Manchester's damp climate made it and the surrounding area ideal for cotton mills, such as Quarry Bank Mill. Manchester's growth was also aided by its proximity to Liverpool's ports and the emerging rail and canal networks.
