About Stoke On Trent - show infohide info
Stoke on Trent is a city in the Midlands of England, in the county of Staffordshire. Stoke on Trent has a population of 238,000. In 1910, the Federation of Six Towns brought together the towns of Hanley, Burslem, Longton and Stoke, together with the districts of Tunstall and Fenton as the single county borough of Stoke-on-Trent in 1910. The newly formed borough was awarded city status in 1925. Stoke has become the name of the 6 towns, despite the city centre being in the Hanley district. The motto of Stoke-on-Trent is 'Vis Unita Fortior' which can be translated as: United Strength is Stronger; clearly a reference to the merging of six towns to create the modern day city. The county borough status of Stoke was abolished in 1974, and so the city became a part of Staffordshire. However, in 1997, Stoke once again became a unitary authority independent of Staffordshire county council. The region around Stoke-on-Trent has been famous for its pottery since the 17th century, with such world renowned names as Royal Doulton, Spode, Wedgwood and Minton being conceived and based within the town. Stoke-on-Trent was also home to repair shops of the North Staffordshire Railway. Today the extended borough of Stoke-on-Trent, including the conurbation of Newcastle-under-Lyme, has a large population of 362,403. Hanley is home to the majority of entertainment facilities, including bars, restaurants and nightclubs, and the main shopping arcade which is home to several outdoor clothing shops (the Peak District National Park is just 10 miles away). The town is home to several museums, many of which focus on the local potteries trade. Even now, the potteries are responsible for much of the employment in the town, though with the decline in British manufacturing many other industries have closed. Stoke-on-Trent lies on the West Coast Main Line, and sees trains operating between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly, as well as some Virgin Cross Country trains to Birmingham and the South Coast. Additionally, there are some local services between Crewe and Derby. Nearby towns to Stoke-on-Trent include Newcastle-under-Lyme, Macclesfield, Crewe, Stafford, Chesterfield, Stafford, Derby, Burton-upon-Trent and Kidsgrove.
