About Thornbury - show infohide info

Thornbury is an histroic market town in the county of Gloucestershire, with a population of approximately 12,000 inhabitants. The town is thought to have existed since the Bronze age, however its first recorded reference is in the 9th century, with a reference to Thornbyrig. The town was also mentioned in the 1089 Domesday book as Turneberie. In 1252, the town was granted its charter in 1252. The town was home to a once thriving market, held on the market street and in the market hall. The market moved to Rock Street in 1911, and in the late 1990's was closed down and partly replaced by a smaller market in the car park of the United Reformed Church. The older site remains derelict; the original market hall is now a clothes shop. Thornbury was once linked to the national rail network, however its branch line was shut in the 1960's. The remains of its station and trackbed are now a housing estate, bypass and footpath. Today, Thornbury is a busy commuter town for nearby Bristol. The town also has a thriving industrial estate. The building of a bypass, the Midland Way, has helped boost industry as it removes the need for traffic to negotiate the steep and narrow B4061. There are a number of attractions in Thornbury, including the Thornbury Pump, the 14th century Parish Church and Thornbury Castle, a Tudor era castle now refurbished into a luxury hotel. There is also a museum and a heritage trail in the town. The town is well linked by road, with the M4 and M5 a short drive away, providing links to London, Cardiff, Swansea, Swindon and Birmingham and Reading. Nearby towns to Thornbury include Newport, Cardiff, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Swindon, Stroud, Bristol, Yate and Cwmbran.
