Kyle of Lochalsh is a small village of 739 people. It is situated on the north west coast of Scotland, in the county of Ross-shire. The village developed with the arrival of the railway, today it is still the terminus of the Kyle of Lochalsh line. Kyle of Lochalsh is located opposite the Isle of Skye. Previously a ferry linked to the trains, however there is now a road bridge which has made the ferry redundant. The village is the shopping and transport centre for the surrounding areas, and as well as having the railway link, the town has a marina with visitor moorings. The A87 links the village to the larger cities and towns of Scotland. The surrounding scenery and wildlife is a major attraction of the village, as is the relaxed pace of life. Crofting is a popular pastime in the village. The village is very isolated, with only a few hamlets in the vicinity.
