About Newtownards - show infohide info

Newtownards is a town of 23,869 inhabitants, in County Down, Northern Ireland. The first settlement on the site was a monastery, though the different monasteries were raided by Hugh O'Neill and his men from the country of Mid-Ulster, after which the settlement in the area disappeard. It was in 1605 that Hugh Montgomery started to rebuild the town into its present form. It was then called Newtown. The town grew quickly, as a number of Scottish Settlers moved in during the Plantation of Ulster. Newtown became a market town, and its market building, in Conway Square, is still used for weekly markets and special events. Industries such as linen and muslin started to develop in the town, during the late 1700's, by which time the town had adopted its new name (which means new town of the Ards). The industries have now declined, as in many towns, and so Newtownards is now largely a commuter town for nearby Belfast. Towns close to Newtownards include Belfast, Newtownabbey, Bangor, Dundonald, Castlereagh, Carryduff and Ballygowan.
