About Lancaster - show infohide info
Lancaster is a municipal borough of north-west England north of Liverpool. Chartered in 1193, Lancaster was built on the site of a Roman frontier station. Lancaster is an old town with cobbled streets and intriguing passages situated on the county border with a background of the Lake District. Lancaster's history is based on its port and canal. Lancaster castle, partly built in the 13th century and enlarged by Elizabeth I, stands on the site of a Roman garrison. Lancaster castle is well-known as the site of the Pendle Witches' trial in 1612. On a campus a short distance south of the city is Lancaster University, a respected national university. Surrounding areas include Morecambe Bay, Slyne, Hest Bank, Bolton-le-Sands, Carnforth, Caton, Kirby Lonsdale, Heysham and Galgate.
