About Plymouth - show infohide info
Plymouth is a city and unitary authority in South West England. Historically, Plymouth was part of the county of Devon and was Britain's greatest naval base. Now one of Britain's few remaining naval dockyards, it is situated at the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar. A major port, it was the embarkation point for the fleet that fought the Spanish Armada in 1588 and for Drake, Raleigh, and several other early explorers. Surrounding areas include Crownhill, Devonport, Devonport Dockyard, Eggbuckland, Estover, Hamoaze, Laira, Leigham, Lipson, Millbridge, Morice Town, Mutley Plain, Plymouth Hoe, Plympton, Plymstock, St Budeaux, Saltram House, Stoke, Stonehouse and Swilly.
