About Motherwell - show infohide info
Motherwell is a large burgh in North Lanarkshire, situated between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The town has a population 30,311. The town has been the steel capital of Scotland, nicknamed Steelopolis, with its skyline dominated by the water tower and three cooling towers of the Ravenscraig steel plant which closed in 1992. Today, the town has undergone a revival thanks to a number of call centres and businesses setting up in newly created business parks such as the Strathclyde Business Park. The town is home to North Lanarkshire Council, which covers a population of 327,000 (93,000 being in Motherwell and Wishaw), as well as Strathclyde Police's 'N' division.
