About Haddington - show infohide info

Haddington is a town in the East Lothian county of Scotland 29km from Edinburgh. It is the main administrative centre for the East Lothian county. The population of the town is 9000. Haddington was one of the first royal burghs, created in 1130, and lying on the River Tyne. The town lay on the direct route to Scotland from the south, and thus Haddington was burnt by forces from across the border in 1216, 1244 and 1355. In the 16th century, the seige of Haddington occured between 1754 and 1755. The seige was the longest in British History, and lasted 18 months. The beseiging force was sent by Henry VIII. Most of the centre of Haddington dates from the 18th and 19th century, notably the townhouse (1748), Courthouse (1833) and Corn Exchange (1854). Also situated in the town is the largest parish church in Scotland, St Mary's Church. Construction on the church commenced in 1375; it was consecrated in 1410, though it wasn't completed until 1487. The church is known as the Lamp of Lothian. Despite the town's small population, Haddington was once the fourth largest city in Scotland, behind Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. Nearby towns to Haddington include Edinburgh, Musselburgh, Dalkeith, Prestonpans, Newtongrange, Dunbar and North Berwick.
