About Redditch - show infohide info
Redditch is a town in the county of Worcestershire, close to the city of Birmingham. The town has a population of approximately 80,000 inhabitants. The town has unsavoury record for having one of the UK's highest rates of teenage pregnancy. During the Middle Ages Redditch's main industry was needle making. In 1964 it was designated a 'new town', and its population increased from 32,000 to its current levels since then. Several new estates have been built in the town to hold the population, many of whom use Redditch as a dormitory town, commuting into nearby Birmingham. The town does have some light industry still, and is famous for Batchley Cheese. The town is home to the Kingfisher shooping centre, which at one point contained palm trees with real spider monkeys, though these were removed due to protests from animal rights groups, and the tendancy of the monkeys to throw fruit at passers-by! The town is well served by transport links, with the M42 being a short distance from the town. The town's station is a terminus for trains to Four Oaks, which pass through Birmingham New Street for links to London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, along with many other UK destinations. Nearby towns include Bromsgrove, Birmingham, Kidderminster, Solihull, Droitwich, Henley-in-Arden, Barnt Green, Coventry and Warwick.
