Harrogate is a small town in the county of North Yorkshire. Along with the conurbation of Knaresborough, the town has a population of 85,128 according to the 2001 census. Prior to the discovery of natural mineral waters in the town, containing iron and sulphur, Harrogate was two small villages named Higher Harrogate and Lower Harrogate. When the mineral water was discovered by William Slingsby in 1563, he discovered it shared many properties with the famous Belgian town of Spa. Following this, Harrogate expanded as the fame of its spa waters spread. The town was particularly popular among the English elite during the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, Harrogate retains the 'elite' tag - it is the most expensive place in England to live outside of West London, however as a result it has recently been named as the 3rd best place to live in England. The town has large venues for conferences and exhibitions, and in 1984 hosted the Eurovision Song Contest. The town frequently attains high places in competitions such as 'Britain in Bloom' which help its status as a desirable place to live. Harrogate is a popular dormitory town for commuters in both York and Leeds thanks to the frequent rail connections. The town is served by rail, with frequent trains between Leeds and Knaresborough, as well as some which proceed beyond Kneresborough to York. Services are operated by Northern, connections to London and Scotland as well as the West of the UK can be made at both York and Leeds. Nearby towns include Knaresborough, York, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Wetherby, Skipton, Ilkley, Ripon, Keighley and Bingley.
