About Newtown - show infohide info

Newtown is a town of 10,783 inhabitants, lying on the River Severn in mid-Wales, in the county of Powys. It is famously known as the birthplace of Robert Owen, in 1771; and his house is now a museum. The town was founded in the 10th century, and grew mainly in the 18th and 19th century, with the textile and flannel industries, thanks to the Montgomeryshire branch of the Shropshire Union Canal. In 1967, the town was designated a 'new town', and has seen a population growth as a result of companies, and people, moving in, changing the character of the town. Attractions in the town include a WH Smith museum (the newsagents was founded there in 1792), a textile museum, a theatre and an arts centre. Nearby towns include Montgomery, Welshpool, Bishop's Castle, Church Stretton, Llanidloes and Machynlleth.
