Tynemouth is an historic seaside resort in the county of Tyne and Wear. The town lies between the towns on North Shields and Whitley Bay, at the mouth of the River Tyne.
The town has been settled since the iron ages, as a result of its headland being easily defendable. Several famous people have been drawn to Tynemouth for the sea views. People including Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens, who was knocked flat and soaked by a wave during his visit in 1867.
Tynemouth is on the Tyne and Wear Metro system, with frequent services to Newcastle Upon Tyne and Gateshead, from where connections to the national rail network can be made.
