About West Bromwich - show infohide info

West Bromwich is a town in the West Midlands, in a region known as the Black Country to the north of Birmingham. As of 2001, the population of West Bromwich was 136,940. West Bromwich was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, the name meaning "the little village on the heath of broom". A benedictine priory existed on the town from the 12th century, and it was around this that the town grew. In 1727, the town became a coaching stop on the road from London to Shrewsbury, and this is where most of the towns growth began as services such as inns sprang up to service the coaches and their passengers, and workers moved to the town to provide labour or these services. In the 19th century, coal deposits were discovered, and so the town grew as an industrial centre, with industries such as gun and nail manufacturing developing in the town. In 1888, West Bromwich became a county borough, incorporating the village of Great Barr. It was expanded in 1966 to include much of the borough of Tipton, and the Wednesbury urban district, before joining with the county of Warley in 1974 to form the metropolitan borough of Sandwell. The M5 motorway passes through the town, linking West Bromwich to Bristol and the Cotswolds, as well as to the M6. West Bromwich was originally served by two rail lines. The Great Western railway opened first in 1854 on the route between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, and a station was sited in the town, the station was called 'West Bromwich and Spon Lane". The line is now closed, but the old trackbed is now used by the Midland Metro light rail system. The London and North West Railway also built a line through the town, to the south, and called the station 'Spon Lane for West Bromwich'. This line is now also closed, with the nearest station to West Bromwich being Sandwell and Dudley, about a mile from the centre of the town. Sandwell and Dudley sees Central Trains services between Liverpool/Wolverhampton and Birmingham, as well as hourly Virgin Trains services from Wolverhampton to London Euston. Nearby towns to West Bromwich include Birmingham, Solihull, Dudley, Wallsall, Halesowen, Stourbridge, Wolverhampton, Cannock, Tamworth, Cannock, Sutton Coldfield, Nuneaton and Coventry.
