Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, in the eastern part of the country on Belfast Lough on the Lagan River, an inlet of the North Channel of the Irish Sea. Belfast has been a port since the 12th century. Conflict between Protestants and Catholics has divided the city since the 19th century. The great industrialists and entrepreneurs of Belfast including shipbuilders, engineers and linen barons made their money and left their mark providing Belfast with its extraordinary architectural heritage. County Antrim boasts some of the most spectactualr coastal scenery in Northern Ireland. Home of the Giant's Causeway as well as the seaside towns of Ballycastle, Portrush and Portballintrae. Market towns are dotted around the lush green countryside of the Glens of Antrim.
