Thurso is a town on the northern coast of Scotland. The town lies on the northern extreme of the A9 road, which links Thurso and Caithness to Falkirk. The town lies on the River Thurso, which flows through the town and into Thurso Bay. The history of Thurso is said to date to the era of Norse Orcadian rule in Caithness, which ended in 1266. the town was an important Norse port, and later on gained a history of trading with ports of northern Europe. The Old St Peter's Kirk is said to date from circa 1220. most of the town is a planned 19th century development. The town expanded in the 20th century, when Dounreay experimental nuclear power station was built 7km away. As a result, the population of Thurso mushroomed, from 3000 to 9000 inhabitants. Thurso sees ferry services from nearby Scrabster Harbour, from where ferries sail to Stromness on the Orkney Isles, operated by Northlink ferries. Thurso is also served by rail, with 4 daily services in each direction between Wick and Inverness. The station is the most northerly in the UK. Thurso sees a fair number of tourists, as it is close to John o Groats, the most northerly point of the United Kingdom. The beaches of East Thurso are also popualar for surfing, with some extremely powerful waves rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean. The European Surfing Championships are sometimes held in the county of Caithness. Nearby towns to Thurso include Halkirk, Wick, Scrabster, Clayock, Keiss, Strathy, Melvich and Reay.
