About Solihull - show infohide info
Solihull is a town in the West Midlands, with a population of 94,753 inhabitants. It is part of the West Midlands Conurbation, and is located to the south east of Birmingham. The name solihull is thought to come from the a 'miry or muddy', or soily hill. The medieval parish church s built on red marl, which turns to sticky mud in wet weather. The town was originally an important market town, and was also a coaching stop. The town is notable for its historic Tudor architecture, as well as the Church of St Alphege which dates from a similar era. The industrial revolution passed Solihull by, which remained a small market town for many years; in 1901 its population was just over 7,500. However, by the 1960's the population of the town was over 100,000 as a result of overspill from nearby Birmingham. Since then the population has decreased slightly, however Solihull remains largely a dormitory town for Birmingham. Today the town boasts a refurbished 1960's shopping centre, a number of parks covering over 130 acres, sports centres, an ice rink and roller skating rink. The National Exhibition Centre lies within the borough of Solihull. Solihull lies on the London Marylebone - Birmingham Snow Hill railway line, and sees frequent services operated by Chiltern trains on the line. In addition, Solihull is served by trains to Dorridge, Worcester, Kidderminster and Stourbridge, operated by Central Trains. Birmingham International Airport is also within the boundaries of the Solihull borough. Nearby towns to Solihull include Birmingham, Smethwick, Halesowen, Oldsbury, Bromsgrove, Dudley, Kenilworth and Coventry.
