About Strabane - show infohide info

Strabane is a town in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, on the border with County Donegal. The town has a population of 38,250 people according to the 2001 census. Strabane was badly affected by the Troubles from the 1970's until the early 1990's. Bombings were common, and attacks on British Army bases and Royal Ulster Constabulary by the Irish Republican Military groups were commonplace. Many civilians died as a result of these attacks, as well a a number of British troops and RUC members. Today, while no army regiments are based in Strabane, helicopter overflights are common and checkpoints still exist. The PSNI, successors to the RUC have little support in the town, though it is hoped ongoing policing reforms will help this. Recent years have seen Strabane, an overwhelmingly nationalist town, become a centre of dissident republican paramilitarism with groups such as the Real IRA increasing in membership. "Shows of strength" have been carried out by the RIRA, with many gang members armed with machine guns and rocket launchers. the Irish National Liberation Army have also carried out a number of armed raids on banks and supermarkets in the town. Until recently, Strabane has had the dubious distinction of having the highest unemployment rate in the European Union, though the town has undergone an economic revival recenty. However, despite this, a Channel 4 television programme named Strabane 3rd worst place to live in the UK, primarily as a result of its unemployment. Nearby towns to Strabane include Lifford, Londonderry, Letterkenny, Omagh, Clady, Sion Mills, Convoy, Raphoe, Artigarvan, Ballymagorry and Douglas Bridge.
