Newry is the fourth largest city in Northern Ireland, and ninth largest in all of Ireland. Newry is situated on the border between County Down and County Armargh. The town is 37 miles from Belfast, and 67 from Dublin. Newry has a population of approximately 30,000 inhabitants. Newry grew as a market town, founded in 1144, and later became a garrison, and a port when it was linked to Lough Neagh by the first Summit-level canal in the British Isles. In 2002, Newry was granted city status as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations. Newry's town hall is notable as it is built across the River Clanrye, the river being the border between the Counties of Armagh and Down. Newry also boasts a museum and art gallery, and has the reputation of being one of the best provincial shopping towns in Ireland, and also claims two of the oldest churches in Ireland. Newry is served by rail, with the Befast-Dublin Enterprise services calling at the town. The service has 8 trains in each direction Monday-Saturday, and 5 on a Sunday. Nearby towns to Newry include Rathfriland, Bessbrook, Warrenpoint, Belleek, Rostrevor, Crossmeglan and Whitecross.
