However, today the town relies largely on service industries such as shops, and South Shields has become a dormitory town for workers in nearby Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland. The town's economy also benefits from tourism through its beach, and by marketing itself as 'Catherine Cookson County', encouraging thousands of visitors annually to view the place of her birth, and to enjoy the attractions on the promenade at South Shields.
