About Dorking - show infohide info
Dorking is a market town nestling under the North Downs approximately 25 miles south of London, in Surrey, England. It began life during the Roman occupation, when it was a staging post on the road between London and Chichester. Later it became staging post on the turnpike road between London and Brighton, and it remained so until the railways came to Dorking. The inn, the Bulls Head, still exists on South Street. Now, Dorking is an affluent town within easy reach of London, and has escaped many modern developments experienced by other towns. Towns nearby include Redhill, Horsham, Guildford, Godalming, Woking, Esher, Sevenoaks and Croydon. Villages in the vicinity include Box Hill, Westhumble, Micklewood, North Holmwood and Betchworth.
