Oakham is a town of approximately 10,000 inhabitants, in the county of Rutland. Oakham lies close to Rutland Water, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. Tourist attractions in Oakham include All Saints' Church and Oakham Castle. Only the great hall of the Norman castle remains standing, surrounded by earthworks marking the inner and outer bailies. The hall dates from c. 1180—90. The castle is attractively ornamented with Romanesque architectural details, including six carvings of musicians. Oakham is also known for its open air markets, held in the town square every Wednesday and Saturday. Towns close to Oakham include Melton Mowbray, Leicester, Corby, Peterborough, Market Harborough, Coalville, Hinkley, Nuneaton and Loughborough.
