Neath is a town with a population of approximately 60,000, located on the river of the same name in the traditional county of Glamorgan, south Wales. In Welsh, the river is the Afon Nedd, and the town is Castell-nedd. Neath has existed as a settlement since Roman times, when the fort of Nidum stood on the spot. Remains of the fort are also still standing, within a housing estate. The actual fort covered an area which now includes the playing fields of DÅµr-y-Felin Comprehensive School. Ruins of a small Norman castle can also be seen, close to the shopping centre. Other major attractions for visitors are Neath Abbey ruins and Gnoll Park. Neath is located just off the M4, and links Neath to London Swansea, Bristol and Cardiff. The town is also linked by rail, and has regular trains to London, Cardiff, Swansea, Haverfordwest and Milford Haven, and less frequent trains to the south west of England via Bristol. Nearby towns to Neath include Swansea, Cardiff, Port Talbot, Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil, Carmarthen, Maesteg, Pontypridd, Aberdare and Llanelli.
